Drug intelligence / Profile preview
ChAdOx1-S-nCoV-19 (AZD1222) is a replication-deficient chimpanzee adenoviral vector-based vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca for the prevention of COVID-19. The vaccine utilizes the ChAdOx1 vector, derived from chimpanzee adenovirus Y25, to deliver the genetic sequence encoding the full-length, codon-optimized spike (S) glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2. Upon intramuscular administration, the vector enters host cells via the coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) and drives the local expression of the spike protein, which subsequently stimulates neutralizing antibody and cellular immune responses. Marketed under the brand names Vaxzevria and Covishield, the vaccine was widely deployed globally during the COVID-19 pandemic but was commercially withdrawn in 2024.
